I awoke from sleep and was experiencing something I had never before sensed. I felt my soul being drawn out of my body and passing through my head to a place next to but out of my body. It was unlike anything I knew, my sense of myself was outside my body. I thought to myself, oh my God I must be dying. 

At this time I entered a tunnel that was funnel shaped and was turning and glimmering like a diamond with purple, blue and white light and had the same faceted effect. It narrowed at one end and had a bright light similar to the light of white phosphorous burning. At this point I was traveling down the tunnel towards the light and I said to myself "oh no, I don't want to die".

At the moment I said this I entered into the most profound peace I have ever felt. I lingered in the tunnel at this point and I don't really know how long all this took but suddenly my soul poured back into my body and it was over.

It absolutely was not my imagination and it still shocks me when I think about it because it was so real. I don't know what it was or why but I'm a Catholic (practicing even) so I don't doubt this type of thing can happen. Whatever it was it taught me that death is not to be feared, in fact it was rather exciting. The thing that bothered me was going without saying goodbye.
