Mom Pays a Visit

From: Story type: Ghost Location: Chicago il Source: Form Submission

My mother Joanne died of cancer in my house when I was nine. Since then, a neglectful stepmother moved in and left my brothers and I to raise ourselves. My oldest brother told me that he had felt that our mother was haunting our house. He reported seeing her in the reflection of the cabinets and once seeing her as a shadowy figure looking out of the master bathroom. I really wanted to believe that she was still around, looking after us, but I was skeptical.

One night when my parents were out, my brothers and I were sitting in the family room, bitching about our new stepmom and saying how much better things would be if mom was still alive.

The stepmom had gotten rid of just about everything of my mom's, but in the family room there was my mom's favorite music box. I don't remember exactly what was said, but one of my brothers said something like "This must be breaking Joanne's heart" and then the music box began playing. It had not been wound in years probably, but it played for a good 2 minutes (as though it had been fully wound). My brothers and I had enough confirmation that she was watching, but we all felt a little spooked. Now that I have moved out of the house, I don't feel her there anymore.
