I Know It's There
From: Story type: Ghost Location: Illinois Source: Form Submission
I work for a major seed company in Illinois as a sizing operator and bulk storage operator. The plant I work at was built around 1980 and is one of the biggest Seed plants in the United States.
I started working for this company in 1999 and like working for it. Shortly after I was being trained as a sizing operator (the first of many jobs I've done), a co-worker who was training me had mentioned about a ghost that he sees every now and then. At first I didn't know what to think about what he said and thought to myself this could be interesting.
I should mention that I am into reading about ghost and other things that bump in the night. It didn't take long before I started to see things from the corner of my eye and also hearing things. I work with very load machinery and lots of them. You get to know the sounds of the machines, whats running properly and what isn't. This also goes for Bulk storage.
In the sizing tower (is what we call it since it has four floors for all the equipment and machines) is the operators office. Several times I see something dark on the side of the door window as if someone is looking in on me, as soon as I turn my head to see, nothing is there. There is a time I was putting my data into the computer when I seen someone walk past the door towards the east wall where screens are kept for the sizing machines. I thought this was a co-worker going to check on something and decided to go and have a chat, but no one was there.
Doors to the sizing office also has opened by itself. The office is about 16' by 8'. I don't smell anything or do I feel a coldness when this happens. So I don't know what to think about that.
Bulk storage is two long buildings that are separated from each other about three stories high, each bin hold twenty thousand bushel of corn each except 4 bins that hold ten thousand bushels each. Each side has sixteen bins. When I started working second shift 3:15PM to 1:45AM, I started back in bulk storage.
These buildings have many fans to them and also lots of machinery that makes a lot of noise when running, but when everything is calm you still hear the usual air compressor and relay switches and ceiling fans running. you get to know the sounds after a while.
One of my jobs is to sweep the bins as the corn is taken out to be sized. You must always have a spotter with you incase something goes wrong. One night as my co-worker and I was done sweeping down a bin everything turned off. I was thinking to myself and then blurted out that sizing must have turned off the machines from over in the other building and didn't think about it since it was about an hour before shut down (12:20 am). we went down to the bulk office located on the first floor when I called to see if sizing was done for the night. The operator told me he didn't touch anything and didn't know the flow was off. I then looked at the main switch in the office, it had been shut off. I work alone in bulk and have to have someone come over to help me if I need help. My buddy and I tried to come up with why the switch was pushed off.
Another time as I was blowing down cat walks on the top floor, I took a break to space out if you will about 12:05 AM. It was really quite in the building more then usual. As I was thinking of who knows what, I heard voices coming from an empty bin about three bins down. I couldn't make out what was being said, but I know I could hear someone with a deep voice talking. I thought it was another worker from the shop and wondered why he would be in at this time of night. As I listened I know there were two voices but one I thought I knew. As I turned to go check it out the talking stopped. I went to the bin I thought the voices were coming from and no one there. All the doors were shut and locked. This happened to me a couple of times.
Now I carry my camera with me incase something happens again. Nothing does when I have the camera, like it knows what I'm gonna do. I know when you work by yourself you hear and think you see things, I
agree with you, but I have seen and heard things. I'm not the only one. I have so much more encounters for you but for the lack of time I will end it here.
