Ghost Railway

When i was about twelve i stayed overnight at a friends house around christmas eve/new year time. We were staying up late and It was around 11pm and we both heard what sounded like an old steam train approaching on the railway line that passes around 50 metres from his house. This was slightly disturbing as the track had been torn up 20 years before. We looked out to that track and saw something big moving past, definitely long freight train size in height and length. This could have ended here, but the following day, my friends dad mentioned a weird thing that happened the night before. At around 11pm he and his workmates were returning home from the pub, walking up to a road bridge over this old railway line, when they noticed that despite being a cold and windy winter night it was a lot colder and almost silent, apart from an approaching train. They also saw a slight mist that was localized around the road bridge and heard a steam train that sounded, in their words, "very near, but far away, as if you had a telephone call from a station and could hear train noises nearby in one ear but something different in the other, except that this was in both ears". We never saw or heard anything like it again
