I first read this story in a book I borrowed from a library, around where I live. The story took place on Sable Island, a small island off of Nova Scotia which was occupied with horses when this story happened.
It was in the 1800's and a wealthy man came to Sable Island to hunt for some treasure he heard was left there from some pirates. He and his crew spent about 20 days on the island digging every which way for the treasure, but found none at all. One night after his crew had finished digging for the night, he decided to take a walk on the beach to clear his mind. As he was walking, he came across some footprints leading to a small clearing in the forests beyond the beach. He followed them seeing they were footprints of a woman, not his crew. Soon he was out on the beach again standing in front of a woman with blond hair dressed in white. He noticed she looked very faint almost as if she was dead. She was also crying and holding her left hand in her right hand. He glanced down at her left hand and saw only 4 fingers. The finger where she would have worn a wedding band was missing, there was only dried blood there now. He slowly moved away, alarmed at this sight of a ghost holding a hand with four fingers and found himself running back to his hut. He told his crew members of the strange woman he just saw and they all ran out to find her footprints. After hours of searching on the small island, no fingers were found. When they boarded the boat back to home the next day, he found himself wondering what to do next, he had to help that woman, he had to find out what was going on. So when he got home to England he read every newspaper he could find from earlier dates, dates even before he was born, for some clue about he woman. He finally found a article about pirates whom stole jewels and buried them on Sable Island in the late 1700's. On the paper there was a picture of a great ring worth millions on a woman with blond hair's finger. She resembled the woman he had seen on the island that night many months ago and so over the next year, he traveled great distances asking people all over about the woman. And all of his clues found him a small cottage in Quebec. He knocked on the door and two little girls of about 5 and 8
