We moved here when I was ten. I'm now 31. My mother and I only found out that we shared this experience a couple of years ago.

We live in a split level house on a dead end street. The little girl runs from the top stairs (leading to the bedrooms) to the front door, or from the front door to the top set of stairs. I've never seen her anywhere else. The first time I saw her, I thought it was my imagination. The second, I was watching a scary movie, and was sure it was my imagination. I was wrong. I'm not sure when I went from scared to accepting. She just "was". My best friend saw her, several boyfriends saw her over the years, and I've seen her so many times I can't even count. BUT, I never told anyone about her until they saw her, for fear of being called crazy. Until recently.

I have children of my own now, and you know how children like to scare each other. One day my girls were telling made-up ghost stories ( not very well thought up ones at that) and my mother and I were in the adjoining room. I whispered to her, "Should I tell them about the little girl that lives here?" and expected to hear something like " What are you talking about?"... That didn't happen. My mother, the level headed, 'stable', no nonsense mother I've known and loved, trusted, and talked to about EVERYTHING but this said " You mean the one in the dress that's too big?" OH MY GOSH! I couldn't believe my ears. The tiny hairs all over my body stood on end. Yes, the little girl in the dress that's too big. But I always thought of it as a hand-me-down nightgown. How could we have lived in this house together for so many years and not have discussed this before? We spent the next hour talking about her. We finished each other's thoughts. The hair, long and dark. The age, about 7. The location, it all matched. This is a true story.
