Hallway Ghost

Well, I guess it"s time for me to stop reading and start writing posts.....
The house I grew up in was built in the 20"s. I know little about the history of the house but I know it has changed hands only about five times. My family has lived there for 20 years now. Everyone knows there"s something at the top of the stairs leading from the upper level to the main level, but nobody talks about it. We just try to ignore it when we"re watching television and hear a sound that sounds like someone is jumping up and down on the landing upstairs....
There have been three instances that have made me sure that my house is haunted. First, when I was a child I was dreadfully afraid to decend the stairs. I always felt like someone was watching me go down the stairs (when I was little I was sure it was a vampire, but after seeing a vampire movie that scared the piddle out of me, a vampire made the most sense so that"s what I decided it was.) I remember walking down with my back to the wall so I could see both ways, or just flat out bolting down the stairs.
Second, my father tells me of the time when he was home by himself lying on the couch on the main floor reading his book, it was about 2:30 am. He heard a shrill scream that seemed to come from the top of the stairs. He said later that sounded like a cat, but our cat was fast asleep in his pillow right next to him.
The third instance took place in the upstairs bedroom. I was fast asleep in my bed haveing the wierdest dreams I have ever had, this probably has nothing to do with any ghost that might be in my house, but the dreams were about a man and a woman running across a huge field. I awoke from this odd dream to find a young long haired man, or maybe a women sitting with his/her back leaning on my brothers bed... I wasn"t scared at all and the next thing I knew it was morning.
So, tell me, fair readers, is this ghostly activity really the work of ghosts? If so, what do they want? Why they here?
If you have any questions or comments, or answers to my many questions please e-mail me.
Alison.
