Ghost Alien...What?

This is a really wierd story, I don"t know what to describe it as. I have absolutely no idea what it was that I saw but this is exactly what happenend..................

Driving home with a friend late one night at approximately 1.30am we were on an extremely quiet, deserted piece of road that was surrounded by horse paddocks and bushland. It was very cold that night and therefore lots of fog/mist was lying low along the ground. I was really tired and becoming very bored listening to my friend as she was raving on about some really boring subject. I live in a small country town and you have to drive down a huge hill through more paddocks and bushland that leads into the main township. I was admiring the amount of fog lying around the bottom of the hills and listening to the endless drone of my friend still telling me this story that seemed to go on forever. She was speeding down the main hill and I started talking about the area that we were in as being incredibly spooky due to all the mist lying about. As we came towards the bottom of the hill I happened to look out the drivers side window as a reddish glow caught my eye. I was shocked to see about four or five pairs of red, large, oval shaped eyes in the tall grass right alongside the road. There is plenty of wildlife around this area but the eyes were pointed (like a cats eye) glowing red and together as humans eyes (at the front of the head not the side). I could see no other features that belonged to these eyes (head, body etc) because they were hidden amongst the fog and tall grass. These eyes were extremely large, far too large to be any normal sized animals eyes (approximately half the size of a human hand). I was so shocked at this sight that all I could do was stare (with my mouth hanging open) as we sped by. My friend was far to busy seriously freaking out about it to slow down or stop. In fact to this day I still can"t get her to drive down this road. I have stopped during the day and looked at the patch where I saw the eyes and can see no change in the grass, no marks, no bare patches nothing. I drive down the same road at least ten times a week and plenty of those times are in the middle of the night. I always look to the same spot at night to see if there is anything like it there again, I doubt that I will see anything though.

The wierdest thing of all was that a couple of months after this sighting there was an item in the local paper about horses in the paddocks in this exact same area developing some strange disease/illness and all were extremely ill or dying.

It was undecided amoungst local vets and health authorities what was wrong with them?
