My husband's brother and his wife owned a farmhouse that was approximately 100 years old. They bought in from an elderly woman who was entering a nursing home. Her husband had recently died.

Soon after they moved into the home, odd events began happening. I can no longer remember the order of the events, but my husband and I lived in close proximity and were kept abreast of the (almost) daily occurences.

Often my sister-in-law would come home from work to find both the t.v. and stereo playing. Jars of spices would be sitting on the kitchen counter. Various lights would be turned on. A cuckoo clock which they never wound would suddenly begin ticking. Often, when she and her husband were downstairs in the basement, the light switch at the top of the stairs would switch off, leaving them in total darkness.

At times, when my sister-in-law was home alone, she would hear footsteps upstairs, and a sound which she described as being similar to 'many wire hangers hitting the hard wood floor' at one time. She would gather up her courage to go upstairs, only to find nothing amiss.

In one instance my sister-in-law poured herself a cup of boiling tea just before she was about to take a shower. She was all alone in the house. Before getting into the shower, she left the full mug on the counter. When she got out of the shower, the mug was moved to a different spot on the counter, and it was completely empty. The outer doors were still locked.

Later, when they owned a cockatoo and a dog, both animals would make a ruckus in the middle of the night for no apparent reason. The dog would also sit at the bottom of the stairs and growl at something at the top.

While I was in the living room one evening, the c.d. player switched on and started flipping through songs. Then it suddenly turned off. Another time, my husband was house/pet sitting, and both the t.v. and the stereo switched on and off several times.

After my in-laws had a baby, the activity quieted down somewhat. Eventually they moved away - not because of the strange activity, but because he was transferred to another city. They had no strange occurences in their new house - save one event: when they first moved in, my sister-in-law was sitting in the dining room when she saw her salt shaker roll off the stove, across the kitchen, and into the dining room, where it came to an abrupt stop about 6 inches from her foot. It had rolled at least 25 ft.

The same relatives have just been transferred back to this area - and they purchased a house that is 120 years old. Who knows what they'll find there!
