Canada Ghost

This is a true story that happened to me near my home in Whitby, Ont, Canada:

When I was in high school, we used to party in the woods north of Ajax (the next town over) in an area known as Salem's Lot (like the Stephen King novel). The area was located north of Rossland Road, a little east of Salem Rd (hence the name). There were many stories associated with the place (not many which we believed), ranging from ritual murders and Satanic activity, to ghosts that walked the woods at night. I thought that these stories were made up to scare the girls that went with us on these excursions, until one night three years ago.

I had been telling a friend of mine, Jay, about these stories I had heard in High School. Since I had just recently got my own car (an old '77 Malibu), we decided to go see if we could find the old party spot. We had a gym bag with us, with the following items: a double-edged knife, a can of lighter fluid, and a dime store copy of Abdul Alhazred's Necronomicon (not that I believe the Necronomicon is real, but we had it just the same). We drove up to the place where the old road used to take us into the spot, to find it...gone. Whithin the 5 or 6 years since I had last been there, the road had disappeared. We parked the car and proceeded to walk through the woods. As we got further into the woods, we found a path that led through two trees with arcane symbols painted on them. We followed the path through the trees and kept walking until we came to the old dam that I remembered from my high school days. The path had a fork in it, one leading over the dam, and the other leading north-west.

It was around this time that Jay got this idea to carve a symbol out of the Necronomicon into the ground. He thought that it would scare any kids that came up there (he has a strange sense of humor). We chose the symbol of Pazuzu (co-incidentaly the same demon that possessed Linda Blair in The Exorcist). We started to carve out the symbol on the ground, and noticed that someone had poured asphalt and then buried it under about 1 1/2 inches of soil. We wondered about this, and thought who would go through all the trouble? Instantly, the stories of Satanic Cults came to mind. Yeah, we thought, there must be a body under the aspalt! We started digging and lit two fires on either side of the hole, so we could see what we were doing. The asphalt came up quite easily, but work was slow as we were only using our hands and the knife.

By now it was getting dark. We decided it would be easier to go back to my house and get a shovel and flashlight before we continued. We picked up handfuls of the dirt from the hole, and threw them onto the burning embers of the fire. As the last bit of fire was extinguished, we started to hear what at first sounded like a large dog about a mile away start barking. Between us and this "dog", was a very large cornfield, that the path ran paralell to. The rows of corn also ran paralell to the path. And it was within about 15 seconds that the sound grew from sounding like one dog, to a pack of dogs tearing something apart that just refused to die. And it was getting closer. Within another 10 - 15 seconds, what had sounded like it was a mile away, sounded like it was 50 feet away, coming through the cornfield. And above all the howling, screaming, and snarling, was a sound that was not unlike what a loose fanbelt sounds like on a cold winter day. It is very hard for me to describe the exact quality of the sound, but considering it travelled about a mile in less than 30 seconds (maybe less than that), and the closer it got, the louder and faster it squealed, I was quite terrified. By now it was about 15 feet from us, and the noise was deafening. I turned to Jay, and he bolted down the path. I followed. We were tripping and falling over branches and undergrowth (it was dark by then), but we still ran in a complete panic. Jay is about 6' 1" and 180 lbs. and I am 6' 8" and 220 lbs. and normally we aren't scared of anything, but that night we ran like the hounds of hell were after us. The next thing I was aware of was the noise had stopped. We ran back to the car and floored it out of there (after a few seconds of sitting there and realizing the lights wouldn't work. They did after about a minute).T

To this day, I have no idea what caused that noise, but I am sure if we stuck around, I wouldn't be here to tell the tale. I have heard wolves, coyotes, and bears before, and this sounded like none of them. Later we realized the "asphalt" were the remains of the old road we used to drive down, but I have no idea who took great effort to ensure it wouldn't be driven down again.

There are a few more stories about the 'lot, and maybe later I will post them as well. Please refer any questions to abbadon@idirect.com Thank you.
