Baby Crying

Last night my wife and I were in the basement watching a movie. Our son (who is 4 months old) was asleep on the second floor of our two story home. We had the monitor down stairs. I heard a baby crying. The sound was coming down the stairs and across the monitor. I knew it was in our house. I assumed it was our son, even though it didn't sound like him. My wife told me that it was not our son. She went on to say that the same baby cries every night. However, it only cries a couple times each night. She went to check on our son and confirmed that he was asleep. This tripped me out a little, but I just told myself that it must be a cat outside or something.

Tonight, we were in the basement again. At 11:00 PM I heard the baby crying again. However, this time it didn't come across the monitor. It was in our house though. I am not sure what to do. This is really tripping me out. How can I find out who has lived in our home and if anyone, like a child or infant, was abused or killed here?? Please give me some info. This is really weird...
