Saved from a Fire

When I was sixteen I had a habit of locking my door, turning on the television and falling asleep watching it. One night as I lay in my room sleeping with the television on and the door locked I heard someone scream my name in a voice that sounded like my mothers voice.

I was so startled by the immediacy of the scream that I jumped out of bed and ran downstairs to where my mother was. As I reached my mother downstairs in the living room it became obvious that she did not call me. She was sitting immersed in her television program and was surprised when I ran into the room asking what happened.

No sooner did I ask her why she screamed my name than I saw a huge billowing black cloud of smoke came pouring down the stair. It was so thick that you could not see through it. I ran to the stairs and yelled for my father, who came running down the stairs. We all ran from the house and called the fire department.

After the fire was put out they told us that it was an electrical fire that originated in the television set that was in my room. Had that Angel not called out my name my entire family would have been killed, and if not I certainly would have been. They told us that within a few minutes the door handles would be too hot to touch. If I had been locked in my room, by the time the smoke had made its way out of my locked door enough to be noticed, I would have been dead.

About two weeks after our fire, the entire family next door was killed in their sleep by an electrical fire in their home at night. I have been grateful ever since for the angel who saved my life that night.
