I have two stories to relate
I work as a Nurse on a medical-surgical unit, I had a Octagenarian male patient one day with terible abdominal pain due to gallstones and was facing a Cholecyctectomy. This gentleman was as kind and as good as they come as was his family, a wife and daughter. Despite his discomfort he was outgoing and very pleasant person. I also knew he had a failing heart, poor lungs and kidneys whose function was troublesom. Yet surgery was intended and I felt he would not make it after surgery.
Two days later the gentleman was transferred from the ICU and still just as upbeat and kind as ever, I enjoyed having him as a patient again. His Wife and Daughter pulled me aside later and related to me that after surgery the Doctors and Nurses were afraid Dad was hallucinating. He kept telling the ICU Staff to be careful and not bump into the two Nuns standing at the foot of his bed, Wife and Daughter even told Dad there weren't any Nuns there. Dad insisted there were and they were dressed in old fashioned white Habits and everyone kept bumping into them. It then dawned on Wife and Daughter that Dad was seeing Angels, and those Angels remained at the foot of Dad's bed the entire time in the ICU. My patient was discharged 2 days later in fine condition!
Not too many weeks later I had a patient who was suffering terribly with Chronic Obstructive
Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and each breath was a labor to him. His Doctors were at a loss as to
how he acquired the disease and why he kept getting worse! This was a man who never smoked nor
had exposure of any kind to cause COPD. He told me that a Angel walked into his room and spoke
with him, and told him to have the Doctors check his liver! My patient insisted that the Doctors
do so, there is a enzyme produced by the liver that acts as a surfactant in the lungs, helping to
remove the everyday impurities we all get from breathing. My patient was found to lack this enzyme,
a very rare condition, and not one a Doctor might check for, his treatment was begun, to replace
that enzyme and my patient went home feeling better everyday!
