My grandmother told me an interesting story once. She was a no-nonsense woman who raised 9 children and lost her husband when she was 27 years old. She was in her fifties when she told me this story. She had lived 5 houses down from her friend all her married life. Both of them had been widowed in their twenties and raised their children on the banks of the Greenbrier River in W. Va. 'Greta' became very ill one winter with phnemonia. My grandmother always went out back and stood by the river at night/she said to make sure all was okay. Then she would come back inside the house and go to bed. On this one night, she went out to the river and looked down the back road and saw 'Greta' come outside and stand in the back yard and smile and wave at my grandma. My grandma said she yelled at 'Greta' but 'Greta' went back into the house. My grandma didn't think anything of it and went to bed. The next day, she saw 'Greta's son, William' She said...well, I see your mom's up and feeling better. William looked at my grandma stangely and said "I only came here to tell you that she died yesterday morning." My grandma said that was impossible because she saw her last night. My grandma always believed that her friend knew she would find my grandma out by the river at night and the spirit or angel came to say goodbye to a long friendship.
