An Angel at My Mother's House

On a Saturday night I was at work in a nearby town. My daughter and family stopped to visit, I asked to take the grandchildren back to my house, it was agreed upon.

Upon arriving at the house I was surprised to see my mother still awake (as I live in her home) and she is ALWAYS in bed early. My daughter and son-in law were due to come get the children, as they arrived they too were surprised to see my mother still up. She then asked them to stay and play cards. This was very unusual at such an hour!! Our usual Saturday night consists of her being sound asleep and I go straight to my quarters in the back upstairs of the house.

My mother suddenly looked frightened and started asking everyone in the room what a sound was. We turned the television off and heard a faint high pitched beep. We opened the front door to a large hallway leading to an apartment upstairs of this 100 years plus home and the noise was loud and the room full of smoke.

Thinking the tenant was home I tried to get in as smoke poured from the door, my mother handed my daughter a drawer full of keys unsure of which one it was, nervously choosing we grabbed the first one and IT WORKED!!

Running in we found it was an item left on the stove and the tenant was not home. The fire department came and said another 20 minutes and the house would have been on fire. I would have been in the back of the house and my mother would have been sound asleep if this was an ordinary Saturday night. I'll never know how our timing with everything worked out so well but I do believe it was an angel around us.
