The Woman’s Sigh

I have just remembered another event that happened to me in Dionisio Cerqueira, the small town where I had the most impressive paranormal encounter in my whole life.

As I told before ( read “ The Haunted Path in the Yard”), I went to this town to visit my husband’s family. The first time I went there, we spent some days at my husband’s ( he’s actually my fiancé, but as we live together I prefer to say “husband”) grandfather’s house, before going to his aunt’s house.

I found nothing different there regarding paranormal forces, or spirits or ghosts, but at one night, I had to go to the bathroom, that is a little bit far from the house. As I said before, their bathrooms are on small cabinets separate from the house, as they are simple country people and etc.

The bathroom was about 60 steps from the house, and I had to cross a small plantation and some orange and lemon trees before getting there. It was about 11 pm in the night when I wanted to go to the bathroom. Everyone was laughing, drinking, eating and playing games in the house, and as it was dark, no one wanted to go with me.

I decided to be brave and go there by myself. It was far enough from the house so that I couldn’t hear their noises anymore. There was only one light on outside the house so that I could barely see the way I had to take to the bathroom, but I was not scared yet. When I got to the cabinet, I closed the door and started doing what I went there to do, when I heard, coming from the back of my head, a woman’s sigh. I didn’t see anything, just heard.

It was really strange, it was like a sad, tired, really really tired woman was beside me and she just sighted like we do when we are feeling sad and in deep pain. I looked around and found nothing strange, I got out of the bedroom, looked around the cabinet to check if there was a cow or chicken nearby but found nothing or no one. I went back to the house and told everyone what happened.

They all got in silence and then my husband’s grandfather told us he had seen a blank image near the bathroom about one year ago. It was dark in the night and the image was like someone dressed in white. Thinking it was a thief or something like that, he started telling the person to get away from his land. The image didn’t move and he started to get afraid. As no one answered and he was alone in the house, he warned he would shoot and as no answer came, he started shooting with his pistol but the image didn’t move, and then, after he unloaded 6 shots on it, the image disappeared.

My husband’s uncle, who lives now with the grandfather, told us he had also seen a blank image near the cabinet, when he was coming back from a party. He was really scared and a little bit drunk so he rushed inside the house and just didn’t consider it seriously.

Thinking back about these facts, I have an idea on who this blank image is supposed to be. My husband’s grandmother has died about 2 years before all this incidents took place. She suffered a lot from cancer before she died, and she was also really sad before getting sick, because one of her sons, the one who also saw the blank image, was living with them and her husband until the adults age. He got married to a very young wife, that was really ill-tempered. Her son and wife made the grandmother and also the grandfather’s lives very difficult, always shouting on them, being very unkind to the elders and always asking them to work, when they should be resting as they were in advanced age.

The grandmother got depressed, and stopped eating before she got really sick. Her daughter-in-law used to shout on her trying to make her eat, and had even slapped her on the face. That was too much and when my husband’s mother heard about that, although she was living really far from there and times were difficult for the family, she got all the money she could and went to the small town to take care of her mother.

But it was too late, and the grandmother died about two weeks after that. She was so weak, thin and pale, and always in sorrow for her fate. I told about it to my husband’s mother, my dear mother-in-law, and she told me that the first time I told her about the woman’s sigh, she got chills all over her body. She did not disagree with me when I said that the white woman or the woman’s sigh could be from her mother, but the next year we were together at that same house and we decided to go to the grave yard to pray for her mother’s spirit, that she could find the lights to Heaven and rest in peace if that ghost was hers. When we got to the graveyard, winds started blowing furiously, and only stopped after we finished our prayers. We both felt a great peace inside of our hearts, and left the graveyard, and from what we both now until today, nothing strange have happened in the house since then.
