The Diabolic

Back in the 1990's I was working in a well established Hotel in the South of England. The hotel had a reputation for being haunted amongst staff, but the owners did not want to advertise it as such.
The hotel itself had a very unhappy history as it had suffered 3 fires in its lifetime, meaning that today not much of the building is original. It is also said that the fires occured due to the land itself being evil and cursed as previously it was used for devil worship and witchcraft.
I was working there as a Conference Manager, and so worked a lot of hours and various shifts. On this particular day we had a group of 12 conference delegates staying at the hotel and using our conference facilities. The room which they had used was up on the second floor, and it was a room all by itself with its own corridor leading to it.
At about 10pm I decided to go and check the room was locked as it was full of expensive computer equiptment. It was also a regular task to fulfill, when our conference rooms were in use. I took my huge jailers type bunch of keys with me and headed up the stairs to the second floor.
As I got to the corridor where the room was situated, I started to feel a little nervous, and I wanted to check the room as quickly as I could and go. As I headed down the corridor towards the room, to my dread I could see that the door had been left unlocked and was slightly ajar. The lights inside the room were off, but I knew I was going to have to look inside and then lock up.
I got to the door, and by now I was feeling really uneasy and asthough I just want to run, but I pushed on the door and stuck my hand in to switch the light on, but as the door opened and the light from the corridor entered the room, to my horror I saw a huge 7ft cloaked demon. It was probably only for seconds, but I looked at him and he looked at me. Its eyes were black and souless and a putrid smell, like excrement seemed to fill the air. As quick as a flash however, he lifted his cloak up over his head and disappeared down into the floor, making a growling sound and there was nothing left, just me and an empty room and corridor. He was absolutely as solid as you or me, and looking at him was like watching a horror film with special effects.
Well, Im not the worlds fastest mover, but I bet I could have outrun most top athletes at that moment in time, I took the stairs 3 steps at a leap and nearly twisted my ankle on a couple of turns. I have never seen this creature before or since, but it was so terrifying I found it very difficult to be alone for a long time after, as I felt like he might appear to me again.
As a slightly less terrifying tale which also occured at the same hotel. I was doing some work in the grounds outside when a gentleman approached me and asked if there were any nice rooms in the courtyard outside, so I told the man that the rooms inside were much nicer and that there were four poster beds available. The man quickly told me however, that there was no way he would stay inside the hotel again, and proceeded to tell me about a previous occasion when he had visited and spent the night in a four poster bedroom.
He had been terrified, finding that a woman was hanging from the bed post at the bottom of his bed all night, with a bloated dead face but still staring at him with evil eyes. He was so frightened he was unable to move and was paralised to the spot all night. After discussing with him which room it was he had stayed in, I soon realised that he had stayed in the room where a lady had hanged herself from one if the bed posts because of a break up with her partner. On many occasions, it is men who will refuse to stay in this room as they do not feel comfortable, the women seem to be ok.
I do wonder also if it is the evil in the building which portrays these visions to people, as I dont believe this poor woman was evil, just very depressed...
