Right after 9-11 My best friend of 17 years had passed away from lung cancer. She was only 36 years old. It was very sudden for cancer. She had been misdiagnosed as having pneumonia. They found out it was lung cancer on saturday and by Tuesday she was gone. I was heartbroken, a huge portion of my world had just been savagely ripped away. I dont remember crying that hard or for that long, ever before.

I was at the calling hours and was holding myself together until I actually viewed her body. It was her body, but she was no longer in it. Now I understood what they meant by the body being just a shell. I started fighting tears and trying to get out of there before I totally broke down. My sister was with me and she saw the condition I was in and pulled me to her and I hid my face in her shoulder and cried uncontrollably.

The reason I am telling you so much about my reaction is that I really believe it prompted what happened next. The room seemed to fade out to blackness. The only way I can describe it is "a portal of light" was opening up in the darkness close to the ceiling, about 4 feet off of the floor.

I could see my friend, leaning into the room from inside this portal. She was leaning through from "the other side" and looking at me. There was soft warm light coming from behind her and there was a tremendous feeling of euphoria coming from her. She did not say anything to me, but I knew why she was there. She wanted to let me know that she was very much ok. She was only there for a few seconds, just long enough to get this message across to me. Then the room lightened back up and she faded away. I was the only one who saw this. I had such a feeling of calm and love afterwards, there was no doubt why she had come to me.

Now I have seen a glimpse of the other side, and I will never again feel the despair when someone whom I love passes over. I will still miss her always, but I know she is in a beautiful loving place.
