Whisper in the Dark

Home for the holidays last year (Dec 2000) as usual, we stayed at my parents' place. We were sleeping in the guest room (yes, the one with all the books) and we set up a bed for our oldest daughter in my old bedroom, which is now the office.
One night, soon before we left I had gone to bed alone, my husband was visiting his parents. Our little one was in the crib next to my bed and our older one was asleep in the office. I had a monitor turned on, so I could hear her if she needed me. She had recently been sick and wasn't yet sleeping the greatest.
I was slowly drifting off to sleep, when I heard my daughter through the monitor stirring and whining a little in her sleep. She stopped for a minute, then again fussed some more. I was about to go check on her when something caught my ear. Through the monitor I could hear what sounded like a male voice.
It stopped me dead in my tracks. I listened very closely, but could just barely hear someone talking, but it was so quiet I couldn't make out the words. She was still restless so, terrified, I went to check on her, I had no idea what I was going to find.
Of course, when I got in there, all I found was my daughter. She was still asleep, and she had settled down a little. I checked the monitor, though I didn't think it was the problem. I made sure I was on the right channel, then sat down next to her for a bit, waiting for my heart to stop pounding.
I have to say, that is about the scariest thing
that has ever happened to me. I asked my dad the next day if he had
gone in there, though I knew he hadn't because I would have heard him.
I'm not sure if the ghost was trying to soothe her, or if he was the
cause of her distress.
