Tall Dark Figure

This happened during 1980 as me and a friend of mine called Mike were chatting and sharing a cigarette (normal one)down a dark alley. Mike tried to get me spooked as we chatted but I was not bothered by it. Anyway to cut a long story short. About fifty yards away we both saw this tall figure begin to walk towards us both. As this figure came closer it became apparent it was large and very tall (over 7 foot)and importantly it was totally black. It came within less than 10 feet of us before we ran off. Another strange thing was that Mike although he ran too, tried to block me from escaping. Mike has never explained why he did this. This is a real event by the way and I am not some young kid just making up a story. I've been a science teacher for over 10 years becoming Head of Chemistry.
