Angel or Spirit?

I have always been interested in spirits and have heard that young children have the stronger conextions to afterlife. however i am still not sure what it is that i saw. When i was seven i was half asleep in bed and i saw my mother sat at the end of my bed. I said 'Hello' thinking that it was her but then realised it was someone else as i awoke myself properly. I know it was female but couldn't understand why it was looking at me? I still live in the same house and the atmosphere is not a bad one. My father is interested in spirits and said that it could have possibly been a gardien angel.
