About seven years ago I took a job in a very rural part of the country. My closest neighbor was about one mile away and the closest EMS was about nine miles away. I was living alone in an eighty year old cabin with no phone service. Late one Sunday night I had a bad accident, and to make a long story short, I discharched my .22 cal handgun and got my own lower leg. I didnt feel a thing, but I started bleeding real bad.
And then I heard a voice: "Tom, you need to get to a phone and call for help... But stay calm! They're are a few things you need to do first."
Nobody was in my cabin but me, but since I recognized the voice, I listened. "First Tom, it's snowing like crazy. Instead of taking two hours to get to an E.R. it's gonna take three. Go to the bathroom... You have time." So I went to the bathroom. "Okay Tom, your going to need car keys and shop keys... Use the phone in the shop." So I grabbed my keys. "Remain calm buddy, I will be here until help arrives... When I leave, shock will set in imediatly."
I drove a couple hundred yard to the shop and called 911. I still couldnt feel my wound, but was bleeding to beat the band. I remember feeling completely calm though, until EMS opened the door. Thats when I went into shock.
To this day I know that the voice helping me out was my best friend who had died in a car accident five years earlier at the age of 21.
