This story is actually one that happened to my mother when my older brother was a baby (before I was born.) The year was 1976 and my mom and dad lived in Cumberland, MD. My brother was a small baby. My dad taught art classes at the nearby college in Frostburg and my mother was a stay at home mom. They would often attend small parties with some of my father's colleagues that would last late into the night. My mom was not much of a party type, but she would sometimes come along and bring my brother with her to these get-togethers.

One of these nights, my Mom decided to leave and walk home. My father did not want to leave yet, so he stayed behind. My mother started out up the long street which was on a steep hill, pushing my brother in a stroller. It was late and the town was somewhat quiet with few cars passing by. A few minutes into the walk, she passed a man on the opposite side of the street. As she glanced over at him, she realized the man was exposing himself to her. Gripped with fear, she walked faster, scared for her infant son and herself. She was now too far from the party to turn back but still a while yet from the house.

With chills, she realized that the creeper had crossed the road and was following her. He began to shout things at her. She upped her walking speed but the man still followed.

Out of nowhere, two large black dogs appeared from between the rows of houses. They walked next to her, somewhat playfully nipping at each other. They never asked for her attention, just walked next to her, circling around her as she pushed my brother. From that point, and for at least the next 15 minutes, she walked with the dogs forming almost what seemed like a circle of protection around her and her baby. The creep persisted for a several minutes, and shouted a few times "Those your dogs, miss? Those your dogs?"..but eventually fell back and walked away. Even in his seemingly drunk state, he knew not to mess with someone that was flanked by two big black dogs!

As she turned the last corner to get home, the dogs walked off the other way, out of sight. They had appeared and stayed with her the entire time she needed them and then faded off when she got to the safety of her block. She has always thought of them as guardian angels for her and my baby brother and I believe they were!
